How we are planning for our Trip

Taken in 2008 in Colorado.

Preparing for a long expedition can be both exciting and overwhelming. We have been planning this for years and only the last few months we have been setting everything in place.

The first step is to plan out the route and destinations, taking into consideration the distance we will be traveling and the amount of time we have available, we don’t want to travel during the night and also want time to be able to setup our tent in the campgrounds where we are planning to stay. We also created a spreadsheet to create an itinerary to plan for all the stops and how much we will need for gas, breaks and places to stay.

Make a list of all the essential camping gear you’ll need, such as a tent, sleeping bags, cooking supplies, and a first-aid kit. It’s also important to stock up on non-perishable food items and plenty of water for the trip. Let us know if you are interested on us creating a whole list of everything will be taking us and where we got it.

Checking the weather forecast and packing appropriate clothing and footwear is crucial for ensuring your comfort throughout the journey. We have planned the first half of the trip in winter mode then going into spring mode for the second half of the trip.

Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition and bring along any necessary tools and spare parts for emergencies. We are planning on doing a full check up on our car at our local dealership and a secondary check at the halfway point in Alaska. If we do have an emergency, we are taking a tire repair kit, extra tire and emergency roadside kit.

Lastly, don’t forget to research the rules and regulations of the parks and campsites you’ll be visiting, and make reservations in advance if needed. We are going to be following the 7 leave no trace principles.

  1. Plan ahead and perpare
  2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces
  3. Dispose of waste properly
  4. leave what you find
  5. Minimize campfire impacts
  6. Respect wildlife
  7. Be considerate of others

Here are some more of the basic rules that the National Park has and here is some more of the Laws, Policies and Regulations.

  1. Do “Leave for trace”
  2. Don’t feed the wildlife
  3. Don’t get to close to animals
  4. Do not veer off the trails
